Some of the linkbuilding techniques that marketers use may include article writing, article submissions (both mentioned above), directory submissions, where they submit your website link to directories. Others still may include social bookmarking, where they will take your website and bookmark them in the top social bookmarking platforms such as Twitter, Reddit and dig.
Pay Per Click (PPC) is a marketing method that has an outcome of instant (well almost) results. But unlike the marketing techniques mentioned above, it only pays as long as you do. When you quit running your ads, the results stop.
The top PPC network out there is Google Adsense, once you set up your campaign and get it running, you will pay them every time someone clicks on one of your ads. You can have a daily limit to how much you want to spend and it will shut off when it reaches that limit. This can be a little tricky, testing the different campaigns to figure out which one works the best for your website and your particular niche.
